Transfer Students

Applying as a transfer student is a smart strategy to get accepted into top-tier programs that you didn’t qualify for straight out of high school.

What does it mean to be a transfer student

  • A transfer student is someone who begins their degree at one institution and then moves to another to complete it.
  • Around one-third of college students switch institutions for various reasons.

Reasons why colleges seek transfer students

  • Many students admitted through regular admissions leave college because they lose interest, find better opportunities, face financial challenges, or encounter personal issues.
  • Colleges are keen to fill these vacancies because it impacts their financial bottom line.
  • Many college students use this strategy to gain admission to top-tier colleges and/or lower their tuition costs.
  • However, other students become attached to the colleges they attend and do not explore these opportunities available to them.

What are the Reasons for seeking Transfer:

  • Program: Students may transfer to pursue a particular program or academic field
  • Location: Students may transfer to move closer to or further from their home
  • Cost: Students may transfer to save on tuition costs, particularly from community colleges. The most critical subjects for any major are typically taught in the third and fourth years.
  • Financial aid: Students may transfer in order to obtain financial aid or scholarships.
  • Fit: Students may transfer if they feel their current school isn’t a good fit for their personality.

How to Apply to Colleges as a Transfer Student

The process for applying as a transfer student is much like the regular college application process.

  • Research and select new colleges: Research various institutions that offer programs aligning with your academic and personal goals. Many colleges have established pathways with local community colleges and readily accept transfer students from these institutions.
  • Check transfer requirements: Each college has specific guidelines for transfer students, including minimum GPA requirements and course equivalencies.
  • Submit an application: Fill out the application form for the new college, including personal information, academic details, and sometimes a transfer essay.
  • Credit evaluation: The new college will review your transcripts to assess which credits will transfer and how they will apply to their degree program.
  • Await decision: The new college will review your application and transcripts and send you an admission decision.

Outcomes

  • Most transfer students complete their degrees and, for all practical purposes, carry the prestigious reputation of their new college.
